Jim is a career federal civil servant; after a few years working for the Army, he spent the bulk of his time employed by the US Navy as an electronic technician specializing in shipboard missile defense systems. Living in Alpine since 1993 on the western edge of the Wright’s Field preserve Jim realized a personal obligation to give back to the land that he frequents and treasures. He currently serves as the BCLT Treasurer and Director of Land Operations for the Greater Alpine area.

Jim can often be found walking at Wright's Field in the evenings with his wife Ellen, and their miniature horse, Crackers. Welcome, Jim!

Join BCLT for our first volunteer event of 2014!  Help restore Alpine's watershed by planting native trees and shrubs, such as willow, cottonwoods, and sycamores, along this once-beautiful stretch of creek. Located below the confluence of Alpine, Chocolate, and Deer Creeks, this open-space riparian habitat is an important corridor for wildlife movement through Alpine and Harbison Canyon to Peutz Valley and El Capitan Reservoir.

As part of our Watershed Stewardship Program in Alpine, Back Country Land Trust has cleared over one-quarter of an acre of flammable, non-native Arundo from this property at the "bottom" of Alpine's watershed.  Now we're ready to restore this creek-side habitat to it's former natural beauty!

Come lend a hand and help keep Alpine's watershed clean & green!

Saturday, February 1st: 10am-12noon

288 Peutz Valley Road - Parking available at Alpine Blvd & Peutz Valley Rd

Event Update: In two hours, our small team of three planted 30 native trees and 400 cuttings along this stretch of creek!  We also hauled away two truckloads of trash, including 6 tires, 4 tire sidewalls, a toilet, and a stolen ATM (which was turned in to police for evidence).  Special thanks to Endangered Habitats Conservancy for partnering with us on this imporant wildlife and habitat enhancement project.

Final “Legacy Trash” Removed from Wright’s Field in Alpine

in General Information
Recently, Back Country Land Trust reached an important milestone in our goal to protect and restore native habitat at Wright’s Field Preserve in Alpine.... Removing the last major "legacy trash" since BCLT began managing this land as a Nature Preserve in 1990!

Working witCarRemoval1 2h local Alpine business owner Howard Findley of Pioneer Landscape, who volunteered his time and equipment to make this project possible, BCLT pulled the rusted shell of a 1969 Chevy Impala out of the creek channel that flows through Wright’s Field, feeding Alpine Creek and eventually the El Capitan Reservoir.

Abandoned nearly 40 years ago, this car and much of the debris    was left behind in the aftermath of the 1970 Laguna Fire that burned through what is now Wright’s Field was left to rust around a residence destroyed in the blaze.

CarRemoval2 2

With the support of community volunteers like Howard, who donate their time and effort each year, Back Country Land Trust has been able to maintain and improve conditions at Wright’s Field over many years.

Recent projects include clearing trails, repairing erosion damage, removing non-native plants, and enhancing users’ recreational experiences by restoring a pristine natural environment with a deep ecology and unique history.

Removing this final legacy trash signifies a new era for Wright’s Field. One that we are happy to usher in with a strong sense of community support for BCLT's work and mission, and with a hopeful future for the environmental health of this beautiful and abundant ecosystem in the heart of Alpine.

Email us if you'd like to learn more, or to get involved in future projects to restore landscapes in San Diego's Back Country.
