Join BCLT for our first volunteer event of 2014!  Help restore Alpine's watershed by planting native trees and shrubs, such as willow, cottonwoods, and sycamores, along this once-beautiful stretch of creek. Located below the confluence of Alpine, Chocolate, and Deer Creeks, this open-space riparian habitat is an important corridor for wildlife movement through Alpine and Harbison Canyon to Peutz Valley and El Capitan Reservoir.

As part of our Watershed Stewardship Program in Alpine, Back Country Land Trust has cleared over one-quarter of an acre of flammable, non-native Arundo from this property at the "bottom" of Alpine's watershed.  Now we're ready to restore this creek-side habitat to it's former natural beauty!

Come lend a hand and help keep Alpine's watershed clean & green!

Saturday, February 1st: 10am-12noon

Event Update: In two hours, our small team of three planted 30 native trees and 400 cuttings along this stretch of creek!  We also hauled away two truckloads of trash, including 6 tires, 4 tire sidewalls, a toilet, and a stolen ATM (which was turned in to police for evidence).  Special thanks to Endangered Habitats Conservancy for partnering with us on this imporant wildlife and habitat enhancement project.

Untitled Giving Tuesday ~ Tuesday, December 3rd

You've heard of Black FridaySmall Business Saturday, and Cyber Monday...  Now, there's Giving Tuesday for non-profits!
A day to support your favorite community organization. (Or maybe get a unique gift for the person who has everything...)

This year, BCLT is partnering with "Giving Tuesday" to support our Watershed Stewardship Program, and the beginning of re-planting Alpine's creeks and streams with Southern California native plants.  Make a secure donation online in support of BCLT on Tuesday, December 3rd, and for EVERY dollar we raise, we will plant 2 NATIVE PLANTS during Saturday's re-planting event!

 Re-Planting the Watershed ~
Saturday, December 7th

In 2010, BCLT set out to fulfill the role of Watershed Stewards in Alpine by cleaning up our creeks and streams
that flow into the
San Diego River. Working with over 30 different property
owners, and local agency & non-profit partners, we have cleared over 100,000 square feet of flammable & invasive Arundo donax and removed over 10,000 pounds of trash from our waterways!

Now, after three years of mapping, clearing, and community outreach, we are ready to being re-planting!
Support BCLT and the Alpine community as we begin with the restoration of 16 acres of native creekside habitat
along the west end of Alpine Boulevard, between Rite Aid and Casino Inn. Make a tax-deductible donation today!

Want to volunteer for this project?
Saturday, December 7 - 10am to 12noon
Group will park & meet at Joan MacQueen Middle Schoool - 2001 Tavern Road - and shuttle to project site from there.
What to bring: Long pants, work gloves, and water. All tools will be provided by BCLT.

Event UpdateDespite chilly temps and a little drizzle, we had six community volunteers along with our Program Director and three members of our Second Chance youth crew come out to lend a hand!  Our team planted 800 native plant cuttings of willow, mule fat, and wild grape to meet our Native Plant Challenge goal of 560 plants from our Giving Tuesday donors!  BCLT also contributed 10 pounds of native seed mix toward restoring the habitat along this section of Alpine Creek.

Why plant native?  Drought tolerant native plants not only conserve water, they save you time & money!  All while providing a unique Southern California beauty, and a diversity of habitat for hummingbirds, butterflies, and beneficial insects!

We look forward to seeing old friends and new 'water-wise' converts at our 17th-annual Native Plant Sale with Don Hohimer.  Bring a friend, and share the experience!

Our Fall 2013 1st Saturday Nature Walks are sure to be fun & exciting for the whole family!!  We have LOTS of opportunities to get involved with hands-on projects and volunteer efforts with a "Native Plant" theme in the next few months.... Come on out and join us, meet some like-minded folks, and make a positive impact in your community!

Some highlights for Fall 2013 include:

* Scott McMillan - our October walk leader - will be talking about his upcoming grant-funded project to restore the endangered San Diego Thorn-mint at Wright's Field in Alpine.  Scott will be recruiting community volunteers to help out with hands-on restoration projects toward this effort!

* Our 17th annual "Native Plant Sale" will again be hosted by local native plant expert, Don Hohimer.  LOTS of native plant varieties will be available for sale in front of Joan MacQueen Middle School on the first Saturday in November.  All proceeds benefit BCLT programs & land conservation efforts.

* Winter rains mean planting season....  Come on out for our December volunteer workday, and help us restore Alpine's creeks & streams by replacing non-native habitat with attractive and beneficial native plants!  Group will meet at Joan MacQueen Middle School, and shuttle to the project site.
